There was once a time when downtown Jacksonville was considered a top-notch shopping destination.

Small shops and department stores lined its streets, often flanked by theatres or restaurants. Shoppers routinely walked from store to store and through Hemming Park, which served as a kind of central court for all activity. Those days are behind us at this time, unfortunately, as many of the buildings that housed those stores had been demolished years ago. But many of the city's residents for a long time have fond memories of shopping in the city center as children, before the days of shopping malls and suburban sprawl.

Below, we highlight several of the department stores of downtown Jacksonville's shopping-era, as a way to remind current Jax residents how active downtown was once, and why we should fight to make it a hub of activity again. Launched by Leopold Furchgott and Charles Benedict, Furchgott's first opened in downtown Jacksonville in 1869, making it the oldest of the downtown department stores. Its original location burned down during the Great Fire of 1901, but a new four-story building appeared shortly after on Main Street between Bay and Forsyth. Furchgott's name quickly became synonymous with luxury, as the retailer became famous for its designer brands.

Furchgott sold clothing for men, women and children, along with jewelry, cosmetics, bedding, cutlery and more. In 1941, Furchgott's opened a large new building on the corner of Adams and Hogan Streets across from Levy's, another high-end retailer. The new five-story, 70,000-square-foot building had four floors of apartments, top-floor office space and a basement. It also had a candy counter on the ground floor.

As suburban shopping malls began to grow in popularity, Furchgott's expanded to other locations, marking the beginning of the end of the downtown store. In the end, the chain ended up folding in the mid-80s, and its downtown store closed permanently. Its old building has since been used as office space, gym and even a punk rock club from the 90s. It is currently the home of Da Real Ting.

I was really excited for a Nordstrom in Jacksonville, but this one is so small and the picks so grim. I stopped going to this mall a few years ago because of the excruciatingly loud music that the manager demanded that he put in the store. It was so loud that you couldn't hear what others were saying, including the people in the box.
